WEEK 17

HINES' TURNAROUND
by D.X.Pert

Larry Sellers' Wrigleyville Sluggers won just 9 games in 2004. Mark Hines bought the franchise during the offseason and started rebuilding. On May 12 he made his genius move: he traded Ichiro and Aramis Ramirez for Chris Carpenter and Alex Rodriguez. These are the points scored by those players after the trade: A-Rod 334, Carpenter 412, Ichiro 258, Aramis 278. I think the Fury did alright. They were 4-2 before the trade, and they are 9-2 since then. They have secured a playoff spot but could use a few more wins to clinch a first-round bye.

With just 4 weeks to go, there are 9 teams fighting for 5 playoff spots. The Beachwood Terriers are the ones in best shape and, barring a total collapse, they should make the playoffs too. The Howlers, Sox and Monkeys are in trouble as they probably need a 3-1 or even 4-0 finish if they want to play ball in September.

The only team that could clinch a playoff spot this week is the Terriers. They need a win and losses for the Monkeys and the Sox.

Things are getting exciting. See you next week!
