WEEK 21

THE REASONS FOR THEIR SUCCESS  by D.X.Pert

HOWLERS: The fewest points against. Clemens' incredible start. Abreu's MVP-caliber season after being drafted in the fourth round. Best hitting in the league.

THUGS: Mulder's innings, The triple threat of Beltran, Lee and Dunn. Balance between pitching and hitting.

MAD TURTLES: Pitching, pitching and pitching. Those first five picks spent on pitchers paid off. Johnson, Santana and Schilling were dominant. Burnitz in the 17th was a steal.

MANIACS: The two supergiants, Schmidt and Bonds. Breakout seasons from Podsednik, Young, Cabrera and Crawford. 110 stolen bases.

TREE FROGS: Home run power from A-Rod, Thome, Ortiz, Drew and Huff. Posada's production at catcher. Roberts' speed.

DRUNKEN MONKEYS: The surprising middle infield of Guillen and Loretta. Latin pitchers Zambrano and Hernandez. Livan was an amazing pick in the 11th round. Almost 1000 innings (the most in the league).

REGULAR SEASON AWARDS

2004
REGULAR SEASON MVP

Barry Bonds (Maniacs)

Same old, same old. The best player in his generation wins the MVP award and it's no surprise. The numbers? .371 average, .610 on-base percentage, .823 slugging, 39 homers, 194 walks. Yes, he did it on steroids, but many players take steroids and no one comes even close to his numbers. He played every week, had only 3 weeks under 23 points, and scored 40+ nine times.

2004
CY YOUNG

Johan Santana (Turtles)

He didn't pitch a perfect game like the Big Unit, and he had a slow start. However, ever since those first weeks, he's been absolutely EN FUEGO. When was the last time he allowed more than 3 earned runs? June 3rd. Johnson had better numbers but Santana was more consistent in the last 4 months. He was a steal for the Mad Turtles, who drafted him in the third round.

HEAD TO HEAD

Thugs 2-1

"The Thugs have been taking it easy and cruising for the second half of the season. We will continue to let 2-year-old Baby Thug manage in the first few rounds of the playoffs, which should be a cake walk. The competition will not pick up until the World Series, at which point Daddy Thug will step back in to dispatch the Drunken Monkeys"

GAMMONS SAYS:

I love this matchup. It will be a battle of different managing philosophies. Hitting versus pitching and innings versus strikeouts. I think the Thugs will easily outscore the Mad Turtles in offensive production. However, despite having several (mediocre) pitchers with 2 starts, they'll have trouble trying to match the Turtles' pitching numbers. It should be close. THUGS WIN

"In the playoffs, usually pitching makes the difference. The Thugs will have more innings this week, but I'd rather have fewer innings thrown by quality pitchers like Cy-Young winner Santana, Big Unit and Schilling. However, our go-to guy will be the always clutch EL DUQUE. We hate the Yankees but Hernandez has always been our favorite player and he won't disappoint us"

GAMMONS SAYS:

First of all, I have to say this sucks. Do these two coaches even care about this league? This is THE PLAYOFFS and they don't even bother to make a short statement before the game. The Monkeys have more innings but the Frogs have nice power.
